During the UAAP Season 81 Men’s 3×3 Basketball tournament, the student-cagers of the league showcased what they can bring to the table come the 82nd season, turning the Ayala Malls Feliz Events Center into their personal playground.
But if there was one breakout player who made a name for himself during the two-day tourney, it has to be incoming UST transferee Rhenz Abando.
Abando, who stands at 6-foot-3 but plays power forward, showcased his entire arsenal in the demonstration tournament. He posted norms of 3.5 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 1.0 blocks to tow the UST Growling Tigers to the finale.
“Masaya siyempre, nakaka-overwhelm. Nakakagulat din kasi naka-Finals kami kaagad,” the soft-spoken product of Philippine College Science and Technology in Calasiao shared.
In the knockout final, however, the Growling Tigers could not upend the reigning UAAP kings Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles, falling 13-19.
Though the game was lopsided, two-time UAAP Men’s Basketball Finals Most Valuable Player Thirdy Ravena was still impressed with Abando.
“Well, of course, because of 3×3, nakita natin yung individual showcase na puwede nila [i]pakita sa court. And it’s a big thing,” the Gilas Pilipinas stalwart said.
“Ngayon, nakilala ko si Abando. Incredibly athletic, gifted player… He is going to be a threat to the whole league in the next coming years.”
Upon hearing this, the 20-year-old native of La Union could not help but gush.
“Wala akong masabi (laughs),” he quipped.
“Hindi pa naman ako nakaka-apak sa UAAP kaya tahimik lang.”
Tournaments like this and the PBA D-League are much-needed for the young Abando. For him, this not only helps him make a name for himself but also aids him in transitioning to the bright lights of the UAAP.
“Malaking bagay ito para sa aming mga bago. Experience ito na sana mabuhat namin sa UAAP.”
