Thirdy Ravena was supposed to make his debut for San-En in the B.League on Saturday against Chiba.
However, the Asian import is still in the country, since he was just able to apply for his working visa last October 1.
“Naghihintay lang actually kasi nag-apply kami sa embassy yesterday. We are just waiting on their call on when it is going to be approved,” lamented the UAAP’s only three-time Finals Most Valuable Player in men’s basketball.
The 23-year-old swingman’s original schedule of departure from the country was last July, to train with the NeoPhoenix.
However, the Japanese embassy was forced to close from March to August due to the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Then when it opened last September 1, the embassy of course prioritized diplomats and those applying for permanent residence.
Ravena falls in the entertainer’s category. Athletes were only allowed to apply for a visa on October 1.
“I think about a week. I’m not just sure if they will be able to expedite it or the president of the team will call the embassy,” continued Ravena about when he thinks his visa will arrive.
A week is a best-case scenario for Ravena. The worst? A whole month.
“Hopefully, just one or two games, but I’m already bracing for the worst to miss the entire October.”
As of now, the only thing the 6-foot-2 Ateneo product can do is train at home as he is still far from his ideal playing weight.
“I have a gym at home and one-on-one training with my trainer sa True Focus. I run around the village and do boxing,” shared Ravena.
“I’m definitely heavier. College weight ko was 204, then last time I measured was 218. I’m trying to lose weight now but still maintaining the muscle to help my legs. ‘Yun lang naman ang adjustment.”
San-En is competing in the western conference of the league’s first division. The NeoPhoenix is coming off a 5-36 season.
