Terrence Romeo couldn’t thank the San Miguel top brass enough after being signed to a new deal despite coming off a challenging PBA season.
Just last September, the three-time scoring champion inked a two-year deal with the Beermen, which he’s been playing for since arriving via trade in 2019.
“‘Di ko alam kung paano ako tatanaw ng utang na loob sa San Miguel,” he told Tiebreaker Times during the league’s Media Day recently. “Kasi after ng mga nangyari sa akin, after ng mga injury ko, andito pa rin ako.”
Romeo only played a total of eight games in Season 47 no thanks to a strained hamstring, though he still averaged 11.1 points in 17.0 minutes.
But the flamboyant guard showed that it’s all in the past with a strong showing in the PBA On Tour, where he led SMB in scoring with 18.4 points on 43.5-percent shooting from the field. He also averaged 3.6 rebounds and 3.6 assists.
Romeo played so well that he was considered for the Gilas Pilipinas crew bound for the 19th Asian Games in China, but wasn’t included in the final lineup as his name wasn’t included in the roster list submitted to the organizing committee.
The veteran internationalist, who last suited up for the national team in 2018, would definitely want to have another shot next time.
“I’ll make sure na sa susunod na mabibigyan ulit kami ng opportunity, or ako, I’ll make sure na ready ako. Kasi ‘yun lang naman ang nagma-matter,” he said.
But for now, the focus is on repaying the trust of the SMC management led by President and CEO Ramon S. Ang the best he can in the season ahead.
“Binigyan nila ako ng chance ulit makapaglaro para sa San Miguel. Gagawin ko ‘yung best ko na maging deserving dun sa tiwala na binibigay nila sa akin,” said Romeo, who’s won two PBA titles with the franchise.
“‘Yung thinking ko is paano sila mapapasalamatan,” he added.
“It’s more than I can imagine. Hindi ko alam kung paano ako makakapag-thank you sa kanila.”
