Terrafirma has its fingers crossed that Joshua Munzon will be back in the fold when the 2021-22 PBA Governors’ Cup resumes in January.
The season-ending tilt will continue on the 5th, with the Dyip set to play Alaska on the 8th at 3:00 p.m. where they aim to snap out of their funk.
“Hopefully this January 8, makalaro na siya,” said head coach Johnedel Cardel. “Baka makalaro na siya, baka makabalik na siya — sana. Sana.”
Munzon, the top pick of last March’s rookie draft, has yet to rejoin Terrafirma since suffering a hand injury early in the 2021 Philippine Cup last July.
The 26-year-old guard has only played for three games thus far, with averages of 11.7 points, 1.7 rebounds, 1.3 assists, and 1.3 steals.
He was expected to return for the import-laced meet — which opened just last December 8 — but isn’t with the team yet, though he’s in the lineup.
Cardel disclosed that Munzon has also been dealing with family matters at home in the States, though he didn’t divulge any further detail about such.
According to multiple sources closely monitoring the situation, Munzon’s wife and kid are still undergoing the process of getting their Philippine citizenship.
“Meron din siyang naging problema sa family niya, pero minor lang naman. Na-solve naman kaagad,” said the seasoned mentor.
“Kaya sana, itong January 8 makalaro na siya,” Cardel furthered, adding that the 6-foot-4 gunner’s hand should be completely healed by now.
Cardel said that Munzon will surely be a welcome boost for Terrafirma, which is in the midst of a three-game slide no thanks to injury woes.
The Dyip’s backcourt suffered a big blow with the absence of veteran guard Alex Cabagnot, who’s out for eight months due to an Achilles injury.
“Ang dami naming injuries. Kailangan na rin ‘yung presence niya rito sa team,” said the former cager turned bench tactician.
But while they wait for Munzon, Cardel and Co. continue to put in the work even amidst the Holidays as they’re keen on returning to the win column.
“HIndi kami nag-break,” said the 51-year-old. “Kasi kailangan namin magpalakas ulit — mag-workout yung iba, mag-shooting,” Cardel added.
“Kasi nga, medyo masama ‘yung last three games na natalo kami. Kailangan mag-regroup kami.”
