Decorated tactician Tai Bundit has officially stepped down as the trainer of the Philippine women’s national volleyball team.
The development was confirmed to Tiebreaker Times by Philippine National Volleyball Federation national team commission chairman Tony Boy Liao on Wednesday night.
According to Liao, the Thai mentor resigned from his post to be with his family in Bangkok.
Thailand had over 20,128 cases on August 17 and averaging 21,784 over the week. And the thought of being away with his family was what made Bundit pull the trigger.
“Yes, he gave me his resignation letter last August 15. Coach Tai cited family reasons because he won’t be able to concentrate to coach the national team with the rising cases in Thailand,” said Liao.
“Coach Tai’s kids are still young with one still in high school while the twins are still in grade school,” he added.
Liao also revealed that Bundit will fly to Thailand tomorrow.
“He already tested negative in the RT-PCR test. He is leaving for Thailand tomorrow,” shared Liao.
With this, the former Ateneo head coach’s return to the Rebisco-backed squad for the second PVL conference this October is still up in the air.
“He won’t be able to coach Creamline as well for the possible second conference. He will wait for things to clear up in Thailand,” Liao said.
The national team is set to break camp on August 20 in Batangas to transfer to Subic for a five-week training bubble.
In line for the women’s team are the Asian Women’s Club Championship and the Asian Senior Women’s Championship.
Bundit, who came in late for Creamline in the Premier Volleyball League Open Conference, steered the Cool Smashers to a second-place finish in the first-ever professional volleyball league in the country.
