SEA Games: Rena Furukawa outlasts Burmese foe, takes judo -57kg gold


Rena Furukawa bagged her first-ever Southeast Asian Games gold in dramatic fashion.

The Fil-Japanese judoka scored off an uchi mata in the golden score round of the women’s -57 kg gold medal match over Myanmar’s Myat Noe Wai, Thursday at the Hoai Duc Gymnasium in Hanoi, Vietnam.

Furukawa, who won the bronze in the 2019 Games, advanced into the semifinals with a successful pin of Thailand’s Senatham Orapin.

She earlier won over Cambodia’s Dalin Cheng in the first round.

This is the 40th gold for the country in the Games and the first medal in judo
