Young Daryl Mercado finished with a silver in the men’s under-55 kg after a sorry defeat from Vietnam’s Nguyen Hoang Thanh via a golden-score pin, Saturday at the Hoai Duc Gymnasium in Hanoi, Vietnam.
The two judokas could not be separated after four minutes of action, and the Vietnamese eventually caught Mercado and completed an osaekomi for the gold 2:50 minutes into yet another extension for the second time in the day.
Mercado earlier took down Myanmar’s Kyaw Htike Htike in the first round.
The UST and Muntinlupa Judo Club product then proved his endurance via a golden-score victory over Indonesia’s Muttaqin Imam Maulana with a makikomi. The semifinal match ended after 5:37 into the extended time, clocking almost ten minutes of action.
The Lopez sisters closed out the individual events with two more bronzes.
Jeanalane Lopez finished with the bronze in the women’s minus-45 kg after winning the bronze medal match against Malaysia’s Ummi Nazeerah Amran with a waza-ari awasete ippon, just 39 seconds into the contest.
Leah Jhane Lopez also took the bronze, this time in the women’s minus-48 kg over Myanmar’s Mya Khin Khin with a waza-ari off a sode tsurikomi goshi enough to see her win the match.
The national team so far has two golds, four silvers, and three bronzes, and will look to close it out with a medal in the mixed team competition on Sunday.
