Jayvee Ferrer’s magical run ended with a silver in the Southeast Asian Games.
The 20-year-old University of the Philippines standout was caught by surprise by a seoi nage from Vietnam’s Le Anh Tai in the men’s minus-90 kg gold medal match, Thursday at the Hoai Duc Gymnasium in Hanoi, Vietnam.
It was, nonetheless, an upgrade as the UAAP Season 82 men’s judo Rookie of the Year ended with the bronze three years ago in San Fernando.
Ferrer made short work of Cambodia’s Rithyudam Horm in the first round with an ippon off an ouchi gari just eight seconds into the bout.
He then held off Laos’ Soulisay Sayasan in the semifinals with a kneeling seoi nage, just 40 seconds left in the clock to advance to the final.
