Chino Sy captured his second gold medal at the Southeast Asian Games, this time in the men’s -100 kg division of the Judo competition at the Rajamangala University of Technology Thanyaburi in Pathum Thani, Thailand.
The UAAP Season 85 MVP secured the victory by defeating Indonesia’s Gede Ganding Kalbu Soethama with an ippon in the final.
Sy first made his SEA Games debut in sambo, winning the men’s -82 kg sport sambo gold — his first SEA Games title — in 2019 in San Fernando, Pampanga.
The University of Santo Tomas standout earlier defeated Laos’ Khamxay Vongphachanh in the first round. He then scored a spectacular ippon via seoi nage just 13 seconds into the golden score round against hometown favorite Kittipong Hantratin in the semifinals to advance to the final.
Another UAAP MVP, University of the Philippines’ Jayvee Ferrer, added a silver in the men’s -81 kg division after Malaysia’s Amir Daniel bin Abdul Majeed surprised him with an arm lock in the gold medal match.
