Caloy Yulo stamped his class in the Southeast Asian region once more.
The reigning Southeast Asian Games champion in the men’s individual all-around was eons away from the field and bagged his second straight gold in the event while pacing Team Philippines to the team silver, Friday at the Quan Ngua Sports Palace in Hanoi, Vietnam.
Yulo ended with 85.150, more than a full point ahead of Vietnam’s Le Thanh Tung’s 14.050. Dinh Phuong Thanh took the bronze with 82.450.
After falling into the pommel horse on his first attempt, the 2020 Tokyo Olympian wrapped up the routine with a flourish.
From there, with solid scores from vault – wherein he is the most recent World Champion – and the parallel bars, Yulo eventually pulled away from the pack.
Nonetheless, it was in the horizontal bars that saw Yulo surprise everyone. The 22-year stalwart was impressive in his new routine, incorporating more difficult release-catch elements that saw him score a huge 15.200.
Yulo then ended the day with an expected solid run on the floor.
Yulo’s score and solid performances from Jan Gwynn Timbang, Juancho Besana, John Ivan Cruz, Justin De Leon, and John Matthew Vergara saw the Philippines finish with the silver with 301.600, below Vietnam’s 331.250 points.
Singapore rounded up the team podium with 297.650.
