Pinoyliga: UP, Ateneo take contrasting wins, sweep pools

University of the Philippines and Ateneo de Manila University took contrasting wins to sweep their respective pools in the 2023 Pinoyliga Collegiate Cup on Sunday at the Enderun Gymnasium.

The Fighting Maroons zapped Far Eastern University in a heated affair, 79-70, to sweep Group Prime while the Blue Eagles romped shorthanded archrival De La Salle University, 79-58, to sweep Group Edge.

It was a heated affair between UP and FEU that saw Harold Alarcon ejected for an unsportsmanlike foul and two ‘flopping’ incidents. Tamaraw big man Mohamed Konateh was then disqualified for contact with a referee. Later, JR Pasaol found himself ousted due to a disqualifying foul, before Aldous Torculas was assessed five fouls.

Still, the Fighting Maroons’ depth proved too much for the Tamaraws.

Malick Diouf showed the way for UP, tallying 14 points and four rebounds, while Francis Lopez backstopped him with 15 points and two rebounds. JD Cagulangan provided 10 points, two rebounds, three assists, and a steal for the winning side.
