Philippines salvages one win, but bows out of FIBA 3×3 U18 Worlds

The Philippines managed to tally one win before bowing out of the 2016 FIBA 3×3 U18 World Championships Sunday in Astana, Kazakhstan.

After dropping their first two assignments last Thursday, the nationals split their last two games, edging Hungary, 18-17 but losing to Spain in overtime, 16-14 to end up with a 1-3 record in Pool D.

The games against Hungary and Spain were originally scheduled last night but were moved due to heavy rains in Astana.

Hungary’s Krisztofer Durazi imposed his will early on, scoring three points as Hungary took a 6-3 lead. The Philippines fought back and took a 10-9 lead after a Joshua Sinclair two, but Durazi scored three of Hungary’s next four points to help his squad take a 13-11 cushion.

Robert Fuzi added back to back baskets as Hungary made it 15-12, but Sinclair answered with two points of his own. Durazi made it 17-15, but Sinclair and Theo Joshua Flores each scored to tie the score at 17 apiece.

John Lloyd Clemente then hit the go-ahead floater which handed the Philippines the win. Sinclair topscored for the nationals with 10 points.

Against Spain, the Philippines raced to a 6-3 lead after back to back long range shots by Clemente and two free throws by Flores after a technical on Bernat Vanaclocha Sanchez.

Two straight twos by Kyle Christian Tan made it 11-8 for the Philippines, but baskets by Alberto Perez and Font Rodriguez cut the lead down to 11-10. Sinclair pushed the lead up to 12-10 with only under a minute remaining, before a lay-up by Rodriguez followed by a two from Dani Garcia tied the count at 13-all. Sinclair and Rodriguez each scored at the end of regulation.
