Godfrey Okumu has stepped down as head coach of University of the Philippines’ Women’s Volleyball Team.
In a Facebook post by the Kenyan mentor, the Kenyan tactician announced his decision to leave the team.
“I would like to make some clarifications on my position with UPWVT,” his post read.
“I have since stepped down as the Head Coach of the team.”
Okumu took over from Jerry Yee back in September of 2017.
During his first year with UP, he steered that the Fighting Maroons to a sixth place finish with a 6-8 record.
Expectations were high for UP went it entered the UAAP Season 81 tournament since it won both the PVL Collegiate Conference and PSL Collegiate Grand Slam. However, the team – led by Isa Molde and Tots Carlos – could only muster a fifth-place finish, tallying a 6-8 slate.
Last season, the Fighting Maroons ended up with just five wins for a sixth-place finish.
“I would like to take this opportunity to appreciate the support that I received from the team for the last 4 years, the office of the Chancellor the VAAS office, and the UP sports fraternity as a whole,” he continued.
“I wish UPWVT all the best as the team starts its new Journey.”
