For the first time in 21 months, Mikey Williams found himself courtside at a PBA game, but this time as a spectator.
The 33-year-old Filipino-American guard watched his old team TNT battle Ginebra on Friday night at the Philsports Arena, a bittersweet moment for someone who once led TNT to two championships.
“It’s kind of heartfelt. I want to be out there with them,” the two-time Finals MVP admitted.
“There are still some things that need to be addressed. I definitely miss them, but it’s love seeing them as well. I just wish I could compete with them again. Only time will tell if it’s possible.”
The Tropang Giga eventually won the game, 91-86, to inch closer to a quarterfinals spot in the 2024-25 PBA Commissioner’s Cup.
Williams has been in a prolonged contract impasse with TNT management, keeping him sidelined from the PBA since November 2023.
While his former teammates continue their campaign, Williams remains unable to play for another PBA team, as TNT retains his rights.
The former G Leaguer also faces barriers in pursuing opportunities overseas.
He is ineligible to suit up as an Asian import in Japan’s B.League or South Korea’s KBL due to league regulations.
For now, Williams remains active in basketball, recently returning to Manila to play for Strong Group in the 34th Dubai International Basketball Championship.
However, his longing to return to the PBA—and TNT—was never gone.
“Of course, you’re going to miss it,” the third overall pick in the stacked 2021 PBA Draft said about seeing his pals.
“For the last couple of years, I definitely made this a home. Everybody has shown me love throughout the process. I miss being out there with my team and everyone I built rapport and brotherhood with. I mean, who wouldn’t miss it?”
While he avoided providing specifics about the ongoing contract dispute, Williams emphasized his loyalty to TNT.
“I always want to be with TNT, no question. Like I said, only time will tell,” he said.
When asked if talks about a return were underway, Williams opted to remain mum.
Despite the uncertainty, the 6-foot-2 combo guard soaked in the nostalgia of being at a PBA game again.
“A little bit, but I’m just enjoying being a spectator today,” Williams shared with a smile.
