2025 FIVB World Men’s Championship

Micah Christenson praises Alyssa Valdez as ’embodiment of Filipino generosity’

Back with the team after missing the 2025 Volleyball Nations League, Team USA captain Micah Christenson reunited with a familiar face in the crowd during his return at the FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

After world No.6 USA defeated No.42 Colombia in straight sets, 25-20, 25-21, 25-14, Christenson shared a brief moment with one of the Philippines’ top stars, Alyssa Valdez.

The encounter was a reconnection of sorts, as the two first met during the 2024 Volleyball Nations League Manila leg, where Valdez crossed paths with the decorated USA setter.

“Yeah, we met each other last year during VNL. We talked a little, got to meet not only her but several players from the Filipino women’s national team and a bit of the men’s team as well,” Christenson recalled.

“And we just kind of stayed in contact over social media. She’s been super kind, offering help whenever needed. It really embodies the Filipino culture of generosity, and we’re going to do our best to reciprocate that,” he added.

This match marks Christenson’s return to national team duties after taking a break following the 2024 Paris Olympics, where he helped lead the USA to a bronze medal.

His absence was felt in the 2025 VNL, where the team finished in a disappointing 12th place.

Now back at the helm, the 6-foot-6 setter is looking to steer the USA to success in the World Championship — the first ever hosted by the Philippines.

Team USA claimed all three points to kick off its Pool D campaign in the global tournament.

“I’m really happy with how we played. I think we stayed consistent. Colombia started slow but improved as the match went on, and it didn’t shake us. We just stayed steady, and I think that showed a lot of maturity, especially from players experiencing their first world championship. I’m really proud of us,” Christenson said.

Team USA will next face world No.29 Portugal on Monday before concluding pool play against world No.10 Cuba on Wednesday.
