Filipino upstart Kobe Paras did not even get a chance to suit-up for NCAA Division I school University of California, Los Angeles.
Paras, 18, was a consensus three-star recruit (*** ESPN, *** Rivals, *** 247Sports, **** Scout) coming out of La Salle Greenhills and, later on, Cathedral High School. The 6’6″ shooting guard committed to Div I team UCLA Bruins last November 12, 2015.
However, an “academic issue” arose early Wednesday morning (Philippine time) that caused the second-generation basketball player to withdraw from UCLA. The 18 year old, even if he was an honor student with Cathedral, was not able to meet the SAT requirement of the school (1750).
“There was an SAT scoring issue,” Cathedral high school principal John Montgomery told the LA Times.
His high school coach William Middlebrooks added that UCLA has made its judgment on Paras but the Filipino will try to find another Division I school.
“They made their decision,” Middlebrooks said to the same publication. “He’ll be wearing another uniform.”
During recruitment, Paras was also offered by Arizona State, UC Irvine, California, Portland State, Texas-Arlington, and UC Santa Barbara. While in the Philippines, Paras has made it known that he will only play for one school and one school alone, De La Salle University.
