Jau Umandal made the most of the chance to face off against his brother Sherwin in Cignal’s straight-set victory over University of Santo Tomas-Gameville in the 2025 Spikers’ Turf Invitational Conference semifinals last Saturday.
The siblings hadn’t faced each other during the eliminations, as the younger Umandal sat out, but they finally went head-to-head in the Super Spikers’ 25-17, 25-13, 26-24 revenge win over the Golden Spikers at the Filoil EcoOil Centre.
With Sherwin playing opposite and Jau taking the open hitter role, the two often found themselves directly opposing each other at the net. The elder Umandal made it a point to protect his pride, skillfully maneuvering to avoid being blocked by his younger brother.
“Siguro excited. Usually opposite siya tapos outside ako, as a pride of kuya, hindi niya ako pwedeng ma-block. Every moment na papalo ako, naisip ko na hindi ka pwedeng maka-block sa’kin,” said Jau after the win.
Jau delivered 26 points on 22 attacks, along with two blocks, two aces, and six excellent receptions. Meanwhile, Sherwin contributed eight points — all from attacks — for the Golden Spikers in the memorable sibling showdown.
The former league MVP, who also served as an assistant coach for his alma mater during UAAP Season 85, enjoyed the opportunity to face his former players, who still regard him as an older brother figure.
“Actually, ‘yung mga bata diyan sa UST, naging coaching staff ako during my last playing season so lahat sila close ko. Good luck lang pa lagi, tapos parang kuya-kuya.”
