Columbian workhorse Jackson Corpuz has suffered a partial tear in both the PCL (posterior cruciate ligament) and the lateral meniscus in his left knee, as per the preliminary report of his MRI scan.
Dyip head coach Johnedel Cardel shared the news to Tiebreaker Times.
Corpuz got hurt at the 8:50-mark of the fourth period of their 2019 PBA Commissioner’s Cup match versus San Miguel on Sunday. He landed awkwardly on his knee after catching a pass.
He still managed to split his free throws off Chris Ross’ foul, but he could not bear the pain anymore and sat down on the court. Corpuz then asked to be subbed out with 8:45 on the clock.
Coaches and teammates had to assist Corpuz back on his feet and help him walk towards the bench. He did not return to the game, exiting with seven points, five rebounds, and two blocks.
The bruising forward’s injury dampened the Dyip’s 134-132 stunner of the mighty Beermen, which also marked the second straight time that they have beaten the All-Filipino kings this season.
Corpuz suffered the same injury as his teammate Jerramy King. The athletic guard hurt his PCL back in the Philippine Cup last January, also coincidentally against the Beermen.
Given the findings, Corpuz is expected to sit out the entire mid-season joust, as it usually takes months to recover. At worst, he could miss the rest of the season.
The Philippine Christian University product has been averaging 9.38 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 1.8 assists for Columbian, who are currently carrying a 2-6 win-loss record this conference.
