For the past week, fans trooped to the SMART Araneta Coliseum to witness some world-class volleyball for the 2022 FIVB Volleyball Nations League. And that warm support did not skip the attention of the world’s top squad in the USA women’s national team.
The last two matches have been crucial for the Karch Kiraly-mentored side against familiar foes in China and Thailand. Still, the presence of an appreciative crowd – mostly made of Filipino volleyball supporters – provided an atmosphere for intense action.
And with the crowd cheering on both teams on Sunday, the USA paced by outside hitter Alexandra Frantti eventually overcame Ajcharaporn Kongkyot and Thailand for an exciting four-set win.
It was a duel between Frantti, who produced 27 points off 24 attacks, two blocks, and an ace; and Kongkyot, who ended with 25 points on 24 attacks and a block.
At the end of the week, the USA managed to sweep its assignment of the Quezon City pool with a 4-0 win-loss record towards an overall 7-1 record in the league.
“It’s been amazing,” said Frantti when asked about the squad’s last week in the Philippines.
“You guys have been so welcoming, so supportive; like your fans are so unbelievable, and we appreciate your hospitality. So, really thank you so much from all of USA.”
In front of 4,327 fans, who reacted to every save, dig, block, and point, it was an overwhelming feeling for Frantti.
“Oh, it’s unbelievable. I mean, I can’t even hear myself on the court today. The fans are so loud,” admitted the 26-year-old spiker who plays for Italian club Chieri. “It’s an unbelievable experience I won’t forget.
“And it’s amazing how you guys love volleyball so much. I really appreciate it.”
The current titleholders looked to carry this momentum ahead of their last week of the pool phase round in Calgary, Canada. There, they will face tough European teams Belgium, Serbia, Turkey, and Germany.
