Famed boxing trainer Carl Penalosa marvels at Brandon Vera’s work ethic

Reigning ONE Heavyweight World Champion Brandon “The Truth” Vera might be a busy man outside the Circle, but he never lets up when it comes to honing his craft in the gym.

According to his boxing coach Carl Penalosa, Vera is probably one of the most hardworking athletes that he’s had the privilege of working with.

Vera does not have an official match coming up, but a super bout between him and two division World Champion Aung La N Sang this October is in the works.

That’s why this early, Vera is already honing his skills while waiting.

“I started working with him back in America at the Alliance Training Center in San Diego, California. I spent two years there with him,” said Penalosa.

“When he’s scheduled to fight, he’s locked in. Eat, sleep, and train. That’s his life.”

“The Truth” has been a busy man since he decided to move to the Philippines a few years back. He starred in the hit movie BuyBust, which premiered in cinemas last year, and is very vocal about possibly running for public office.

According to Carl – who is the sibling of retired boxing world champions Gerry and Dodie Boy – Vera is able to stay on top of his game amid his busy schedule because he listens and he knows when it’s time to focus on his preparation.

“Brandon is easy to teach ’cause he’s very smart. Whatever you teach him, he’ll get it right away,” shared Penalosa.

“He’s improved a lot in boxing because of his focus and dedication. Even when he’s tired, training never stops. I believe that we haven’t seen the best of him.”

At 41 years old, Vera has seen plenty in the world of professional mixed martial arts. And right now, he’s in the middle of a great run, having won his last four contests via first-round stoppages.

Despite all the accolades and recognition he has rightfully earned throughout his career, Penalosa said that his prized pupil is yet to reach his best form.

“Brandon still has a long way to go. He will still get better.”
