A dream 16 years in the making
Ever since he started to compete in mixed martial arts back in 2002, Brandon Vera has dreamed of being a champion in two divisions.
However, being the ONE Heavyweight World Champion and now at 40 years of age, it seemed that that dream has become just that — a dream.
Last Thursday however, Vera, who has yet to compete since December of 2016, declared his intention to challenge one of the biggest sharks in Asia in Aung La N Sang for one of his two belts: The Light Heavyweight World Championship.
“After my next fight, I would like to fight for the light heavyweight title. I would like to have that happen here in Japan,” said the Filipino-American, who owns a 15-7 (1) record.
The initial plans for ONE Championship’s first foray in Japan is on March 31, 2019. But as early as now, Chairman Chatri Sityodtong has received equal interest from the Burmese Python.
“I think we can make that happen,” Sityodtong confirmed. “Aung La is game. Aung La reached out to me and he wanted to fight in Japan, so we’ve got an opponent.
“I love that.”
Who ever said that dreams don’t come true?
