Former ONE Heavyweight World Champion Brandon “The Truth” Vera has been waiting for his chance to return to the Circle and prove he still belongs among the elite of the growing division.
After focusing on fatherhood and facing COVID-19 restrictions, Vera is now ready for a comeback.
“The downtime has been frustrating, to be honest. It’s just been corona, and then timeout, and then more timeout,” Vera said.
“Now I’m excited to go – really excited to go.”
Entering his second decade as a fighter, “The Truth” believes he still has a lot more to give to MMA, and he knows that he can prove it by scaling ONE Championship’s heavyweight division’s ladder once again and getting his belt back.
“Staying motivated is something that we’ve been talking about a lot with all the athletes, and honestly you have to break it down to what your dream is. Do you remember what your dream is? Do you still want your dream?” Vera said.
“My dream has been my guiding light since day one, and my Filipino blood makes me believe that I can do all those things. I can do whatever I want to do.”
‘Where Are They Getting These Animals?’
Vera will have his eyes glued to the screen for ONE Fight Night 1: Moraes vs. Johnson II, which airs in U.S. primetime on Amazon’s Prime Video on 26 August (27 August Manila Time).
The event features some of the biggest challenges he’ll most likely face upon returning to the ONE Circle.
In the two heavyweight clashes of the night, Marcus “Buchecha” Almeida will take on Kirill Grishenko, while Amir Aliakbari looks for his breakthrough against Mauro Cerilli.
“You know, every time I see more and more people coming in I ask myself, ‘Where are they getting these animals? Where are they finding these monsters, man?’” Vera said.
“It’s great. It’s amazing. It helps me stay motivated. I know that if I don’t stay in shape, I won’t be ready for them when I come back.”
