Alas Pilipinas Women’s head coach Jorge Souza de Brito is ready for his return to the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) as he takes the helm of Capital1, marking his first stint in the league in over a year and a half.
De Brito expressed his excitement about coming back to what he described as the “best league” in the Philippines.
This will be his first PVL appearance since calling the shots for Akari during the 2023 Reinforced Conference. Despite juggling duties with the national team and Capital1, De Brito assured that managing both roles would not be an issue.
“It’s never been a problem being a coach with a club. The teams have since followed the calendar, so it’s not a problem. It’s really, really, really okay,” said the Brazilian tactician.
“It’s good because, being on the national team, you work with guys from different teams with different skills. But also, you have to bring the level for all the teams. I’m happy because I can also help in the PVL. That’s our best league and I want to be part of the best, always,” he added.
De Brito also confirmed his participation in the upcoming PVL on Tour, where Capital1 is scheduled to face powerhouse teams Creamline and Cignal on June 22 and 23, respectively, in Vigan, Ilocos Sur.
“It’s me. I’ll be there. I’m going there on Friday after the practice with the national team, I’ll join the team. I’ll be there against Creamline,” he confirmed.
The 1992 Barcelona Olympics gold medalist also shared his enthusiasm about continuing his work with national team standout and Capital1’s top overall pick, Bella Belen. De Brito said one of his top priorities is helping her take her game to the next level.
“It’s my challenge to keep her focus on her career to improve and also to help the team. I think they’re trying in Capital1 to give her the best environment to grow as a player, as a teammate and as a leader also,” said De Brito.
He acknowledged that transitioning to the professional ranks will be a significant adjustment for Belen, who has spent 11 years with National University.
“She’s been with the NU team for 11 years. It’s kind of a big change for her, also. Not only changing from the UAAP, from UAAP or college, but also to be a pro,” said De Brito.
Still, De Brito believes that the three-time UAAP MVP has the right mindset and work ethic to thrive in the PVL. With the proper support, he’s confident Belen will adjust quickly and make a lasting impact.
“It’s new exposure for her to be in the national team for long — not as a baby but young players. Right now, she’ll change her status and has to lead the team and has the potential to do that.”
