Cignal fortifies HD Spikers with JM Ronquillo, Martin Bugaoan


In moves to bolster its already championship-winning squad, Cignal signed three standout UAAP players during the mid-year break.

The additions of setter Joshua Retamar, opposite hitter JM Ronquillo, and middle blocker Martin Bugaoan aim to fortify the most decorated men’s volleyball team in the country, the HD Spikers, that recently clinched the 2024 Spikers’ Turf Open Conference title.

Joshua Retamar, a key figure in National University’s historic ‘four-peat’ victory, brings his exceptional playmaking skills to Cignal. Retamar, who secured three straight titles and back-to-back Finals MVP awards in UAAP Seasons 85 and 86, is expected to make an immediate impact with his experience and leadership on the court.

Joining Retamar is JM Ronquillo from De La Salle University. Known for his role in La Salle’s formidable three-headed attack, Ronquillo’s performance helped the Green Spikers reach the Final Four in consecutive seasons. His prowess as an opposite hitter will add depth and versatility to Cignal’s offensive arsenal.

Rounding out the new signings is Martin Bugaoan from Far Eastern University. Bugaoan, the brother of Cignal’s own JP Bugaoan, concluded his collegiate career with a stellar performance, earning the 1st Best Middle Blocker Award in UAAP Season 86 and leading the Tamaraws to a third-place finish. His defensive skills and net presence will be invaluable to Cignal’s front line.

Cignal HD Spikers head coach Dexter Clamor expressed confidence in the new acquisitions, stating, “Men’s volleyball has been gaining steam again as the pandemic died down, so we see it fit that Cignal sustains its dominance and excellence in the sport since 2013. The level of talent has been rising, and we want to get the best ones out there to bolster our squad and win more championships. Hopefully, these three will be here for the long haul and help us reach our goals each conference and season.”

With a strengthened roster now boasting depth and talent across all positions, Cignal is poised for continued success.
