Joshua Retamar is set to break new ground for Philippine volleyball after signing with Ordu VK of Azerbaijan for the 2026–27 season, becoming the first Filipino player to compete as an import in the European Cup.
The Filipino setter will leave for Azerbaijan on Aug. 11 to join Ordu VK ahead of the new campaign, giving him time to settle into the team’s system before official competitions begin.
For a setter, the adjustment period is especially critical. As the team’s chief playmaker, Retamar will be tasked with directing the offense, developing chemistry with his hitters, and establishing the communication and timing needed to execute the club’s attack.
His management said negotiations with Ordu VK had been ongoing for several months, with the Azerbaijani club identifying Retamar as a key piece to orchestrate its offense.
“This is a dream come true and a challenge that I’m truly excited to embrace,” Retamar said.
“Playing in Europe has always been one of my aspirations because it allows me to compete against some of the best players in the world and continue growing as an athlete. While I may be wearing the colors of Ordu Sports Club, I know that I will still be carrying the Philippines with me on another playing field,” he added.
“Every match is an opportunity to show the world what Filipino volleyball players are capable of, and I hope this journey inspires more young athletes to dream bigger and believe that opportunities beyond Asia are possible.”
His representatives emphasized the importance of arriving before the season begins, noting that a setter’s success depends heavily on building familiarity with teammates long before the opening match.
“For a setter, joining the team ahead of the season is extremely important. Building chemistry with teammates cannot be rushed, and Joshua’s early arrival will allow him to fully integrate into the team’s system before official competitions begin,” his management Virtual Playground said.

Retamar also thanked his coaches, teammates, supporters, and everyone who helped him reach the milestone, expressing hope that his move would create more opportunities for Filipino players to compete overseas.
