Owa Retamar is set to rejoin Alas Pilipinas Men for the men’s volleyball event of the 20th Asian Games in Japan after securing permission from his new club, Azerbaijan’s Ordu.
Retamar, who signed with Ordu last August, was allowed to leave during the latter part of the club’s training camp to represent the Philippines in the Asiad.
“This goes beyond contracts or obligations. When the country calls, you play for something bigger than yourself,” the former National University star said.
“I’m grateful to Ordu for allowing me to represent the Philippines, and after the Asian Games, I will return with the same commitment to fulfill my responsibilities to the club.”
The upcoming Asian Games will mark Retamar’s debut in the quadrennial meet after he was left off the national team roster in 2018.
He will return to Ordu immediately after the Asian Games to resume his club commitments.
The Philippines will begin its campaign in Pool D on September 27 against South Korea.
