Another Filipino world champion will be defending his title in a marquee card this September.
John Riel Casimero (22-3, 14) will head to the United Kingdom to defend his IBF World Flyweight Championship as part of the stacked card headlined by the middleweight showdown pitting Gennady Golovkin and Kell Brook this September 10 at The O2 Arena in Greenwich, London, United Kingdom.
“Quatro Alas” returns to the ring for his first title defense after knocking out rival Amnat Ruenroeng to claim the belt last May. The win also avenged his loss to the Thai that snapped his seven-fight winning run.
The 26-year-old will be pitted against local favorite, Charlie Edwards (8-0, 3KOs).
The undefeated boxer out of Surrey, United Kingdom is fresh from his six round unanimous decision victory over Nicaragua’s Jose Aguilar in Berlin, Germany, last July. The bout served as a tune-up for his fight against the Filipino champion, and  Edwards aims to become a champion in his own right in less than ten professional fights.
“Many people may think this is too early but believe me when I say this, that IBF world title is coming home with me,” Edwards said in an interview with SkySports.
“People underestimate my engine. Halfway through the fight, when he’s behind, he will not be catching up.”
The cocky Englishman then revealed the reason why he was awarded this opportunity so quickly.
“I didn’t turn pro to knock over journeymen. I’m in this game to take over the lighter weight divisions,” he said. “The team behind me at MGM know I am more than ready for this and I would like to thank them, Eddie and Barry Hearn for giving me this chance – I won’t let anybody down.”
Currently, Casimero is at the tail end of his training camp in Caloocan City and will be flying to London on Sunday.
