Justin Brownlee wasn’t shy to admit that ‘it would be great’ for his part if he’d bag home Best Import honors of the 2022 PBA Governors’ Cup,
While he remains locked in on helping Ginebra defend the throne against a familiar foe in Meralco, the 33-year-old said that winning the plum is something that he’ll be able to look back on proudly once all is said and done.
“Of course, it would be great,” he said after the pre-Finals presser at Novotel, Monday.
“Definitely, it’s not the main focus, but those types of awards, it’s stuff that you can look back on once you’re probably done with your career.”
Brownlee is now leading the stats race among the league’s top foreign reinforcements with 53.7 statistical points (SPs), thanks to his splendid outings in the quarterfinals versus NLEX and in the semis opposite TNT.
The four-time champion is now averaging 30.3 points, 11.2 rebounds, 5.4 assists, 1.7 steals, and 1.6 blocks in the conference.
On his rearview are Magnolia’s Mike Harris with 49.2 SPs; Tony Bishop of Meralco with 47.5; and NLEX’s Cameron Clark with 41.8.
Brownlee is now on pace to finally win the Best Import plum in the tournament after losing thrice to Allen Durham even after leading the Barangay to the Governors’ Cup championship in 2016, 2017, and 2019.
Well, he’s won one in the past but in the 2018 Commissioner’s Cup. He’s the shortest import to win the award in the tilt featuring 6-10 imports.
“Of course, you want the championships, but also you know, those individual awards, they probably would mean something even more probably to your grandkids or your kids,” said the cager from Tifton, Georgia.
But definitely, nothing feels better than winning a crown — Brownlee now has the chance to earn his fifth ring with the crowd darlings.
“It would be great to win those awards, but of course like you said, the main focus is definitely the championship,” he said.
