For the first time in 22 months, Kai Sotto is suiting up for Gilas Pilipinas Men.
The 7-foot-4 big man attended the national team’s first practice on Monday as Gilas Pilipinas began preparations for the FIBA World Cup 2027 Asian Qualifiers’ fourth window.
Gilas head coach Tim Cone confirmed Sotto’s return to the national team.
“We had our first day of practice, and it was great, especially because Kai joined us in practice and is taking a break from his schedule to play for us in the window,” said Cone.
Sotto’s return to national team duty could not have come at a better time.
Gilas has not won since Window 1, dropping four straight games in the qualifiers to fall to 2-4 in the standings.
The Philippines will host Jordan on August 28 and Syria on August 30 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.
“As we have said, it’s a do-or-die situation, and we’re extremely happy that he responded to the call,” said Cone.
“No doubt, he’s a game-changer for us.”
The last time Sotto suited up for Gilas was during the Asia Cup 2025 Qualifiers, where he averaged 15.5 points, 12.5 rebounds, and 2.3 blocks per game.
He now bolsters a Gilas frontline that will be without Quentin Millora-Brown, who is dealing with a back injury, and Mike Phillips, who has personal commitments.
“I already feel like a better coach with him in the fold,” said Cone.
The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas is also assisting Sotto with his documentation as he works to regain his amateur status ahead of his planned move to an NCAA Division I school in the fall.
Gilas is still awaiting the return of Justin Brownlee from the United States.
Meanwhile, everyone in the pool took part in Monday’s practice at the SMC complex.
“We have 10 days to prep. We’re all excited.”
