Hours after receiving notice of his punishment, Bo Perasol questioned the extent of it.
The fourth-year UP Fighting Maroons head coach asserted that his three-game suspension is too harsh.
“I’ve already said my piece about regretting what I did. A three-game suspension for an ejection is just too much,” he said.
With 6:23 left in the third period of the said game, Perasol entered the playing court before confronting game official Jaime Rivano. He then received two technical fouls for his unsportsmanlike behavior, leading to his disqualification.
An ejection automatically incurs a one-game suspension.
However, Perasol’s actions afterward merited an additional punishment. The league added two more games that will make him miss the Fighting Maroons’ games against the FEU Tamaraws (October 6); UE Red Warriors (October 12); and UST Growling Tigers (October 16).
“Three games suspension for an ejection is just too much. More importantly, because the tournament is in its critical stage going into the second round. It’s practically half of it. To appeal this decision is the most rational action to do,” Perasol said.
However, Article 9.2.3 of the UAAP General Tournament Guidelines, 2019 states that, “It shall also be the responsibility of the Tournament Commissioner or its equivalent to impose disciplinary measures on any student-athlete, team official, and/or any accompanying delegation member who violates the fundamental values of respect, fairness, civility, honesty, and responsibility. Demonstrates highly unsportsmanlike conduct and/or deliberately employs dangerous or dirty tactics or fouls in the course of a game.”
In Perasol’s case, he assumed a fighting stance against game official Jaime Rivano while spewing profanities.
Still, Perasol has 48 hours to make an appeal as stated by article 9.2.8 (Remedies in matters relating to discipline/sanction).
The rule states that, [9.2.8.3] “Said motion must be filed within 48 hours (excluding Sat, Sun, and holidays) after notice of the resolution imposing the penalty” on ground that the said motion is [9.2.8.2] “the aggrieved party under this section may move for reconsideration upon the grounds that the penalty imposed is excessive or that the evidence is insufficient to justify said penalty.”
The commissioner shall resolve the motion within 48 hours from receipt of Perasol’s appeal.
