James Kwekuteye will test the waters before deciding on whether he will come back to San Beda University.
The Filipino-Canadian guard has signed with the Zamboanga Valientes for the 2023 ASEAN Basketball Invitational next month.
He will be avail of the Games and Amusements Board’s special guest player licence so that he won’t forfeit his collegiate eligibility.
“No goodbyes,” read Canlas’ social media post.
“Don’t know what the future holds but I’m never backing down.”
In his senior year, Kwekuteye averaged 15.37 points, 6.53 rebounds, 2.26 assists, and 1.37 steals per game. He is set to be named to the All-NCAA team for the second time in his career.
In Zamboanga, he will be reunited with former Red Lions teammate Kemark Carino.
Carino previously played for B.League Division II team Aomori. He recently played for Brunei in Malaysia’s Major Basketball League.
Both Kwekuteye and Carino are represented by Titan Management Group.
Zamboanga will open its Invitationals campaign against Louvre Indonesia on January 3. They then face the Saigon Heat on January 6, NS Matrix Malaysia on January 7, and the Singapore Slingers on January 8.
