Throughout his illustrious career, Eduard “Landslide” Folayang has always had one woman he can turn to at the end of the day.
Genevieve Folayang — the Filipino mixed martial artist’s wife — has been a huge source of motivation for “Landslide” in his legendary career.
She has seen the ups and downs of the man touted as the face of Philippine mixed martial arts. And when her husband falls short, Genevieve helps him put everything into perspective.
“When we talk in private, we evaluate all the things that happened, but I let him share what’s in his head first,” Genevieve said.
“I never tell him, ‘This is what you did wrong’, or, ‘You should have done this’. He himself knows his shortcomings. He will be the first one to admit it. He will tell me what went wrong and the things that he failed to do.”
Genevieve also shared that her husband can get needlessly apologetic when he falls short of his target.
“He would always say sorry. He would feel so bad that he did not get the win, or he would feel so bad for the things that he failed to do,” she said.
“He always feels like there’s something he should have done.”
The Team Lakay superstar and former ONE Lightweight World Champion from Baguio City lost his last outing against Pieter “The Archangel” Buist by razor-thin split decision in the co-main event of ONE: Fire and Fury in January.
It was a close contest, in which Folayang and his fans felt the Filipino deserved the nod, but the Baguio City native accepted the outcome.
“In his last fight, he told me, ‘I think this loss is destined for me to understand the things that I did wrong and to develop the things that are still lacking in me’,” Genevieve said.
“When he lost, he immediately thought that his opponent could use that win more. That’s his thought process each time he loses. I was consoling him, telling him that he should have won, but he would insist that it’s okay,” she continued.
“It’s his spirit which stands out in losses. He’s always calm. He always thinks of the best of his opponents, thinking that they deserve the win for their families.”
Genevieve experienced a similar situation when her husband lost his ONE Lightweight World Title in a rematch with Shinya “Tobikan Judan” Aoki at ONE: A New Era last March.
“When he came back from Japan, he had the same spirit. He had his chin up, saying that he will be better,” she said.
“He always thinks the best of his opponent. He’s very calm after every match, and he never throws fits or shows frustration whenever he loses.”
