Meralco is sending a strong message to the rest of the field in the ongoing 2019 PBA Governors’ Cup.
On Sunday night, the Bolts played extremely well, handing known tormentors Barangay Ginebra a harsh 101-77 beatdown, which extended their winning streak to three in the tilt.
That 24-point victory came as a perfect follow-up to their dominant 125-99 conquest of the Grand Slam-seeking San Miguel Beermen, which they pulled off exactly a week ago.
According to the league’s stats chief Fidel Mangonon III, this has been the first time in Meralco franchise history that the Bolts won back-to-back games by at least 24 points.
“We just try to let everybody know that we’re for real. We’re a real team.
“And I told them in the beginning, we gotta let them know that that wasn’t a fluke and we gotta keep playing our game and playing hard defense and running. And that’s what we did tonight,” said Allen Durham, who powered the Orangemen with 39 points, 12 rebounds, seven assists, two steals, and a block.
Sunday’s win is even more meaningful since it has enabled Meralco to clinch a quarterfinal spot. The Bolts have also grabbed solo third in the standings with a 6-2 card.
However, the former two-time Best Import said that their big wins against the powerhouse teams won’t mean anything if they don’t finish the elimination round on a strong note.
“It doesn’t mean nothing, you know. We got three more games. We gotta finish off the elimination round, and we wanna finish strong going into the quarterfinals and stuff like that,” the 31-year-old former Best Import said.
“So just another step in where we’re trying to go. And now, we gotta make sure that we validate these wins with finishing up the right way.”
