Alyssa Valdez has never said no when her country calls upon her
The local volleyball superstar has represented the Philippines ever since she was in high school, having played in several regional tournaments and even carrying our flag in the opening ceremony of the 2015 Southeast Asian Games.
In 2017, however, the Phenom’s road to a spot on the Philippine Team has been rocky, to say the least. Her commitment has been questioned, and she even had to make a last minute call to head coach Francis Vicente.
In the end, it was all worth it as the 23-year-old made the first cut.
“I feel very blessed, maraming nangyari.
“But still we’re thankful na nasama rin tayo but its not the final lineup pa naman so we still have to do our responsibility for the national team,” Valdez shared after Creamline’s four-set win over Pocari Sweat.
About her talk with Vicente, her former coach at the University of Santo Tomas high school, Valdez said she had simply wanted to communicate her desire to continue serving the country.
“I think ang napagusapan lang namin ni sir Vince ay constant communication that is needed para mas maganda ang flow ng pag-organize ng lahat. I think that’s the key,” added the three-time PVL MVP who even gave a copy of her schedule to Vicente to ensure optimal clarity between both sides.
“I think both parties are trying to compromise para mas magkasama-sama ang lahat para makapag-prepare tayo sa SEA Games.”
Although Valdez has won a lifetime’s worth of achievements at such a young age, the proud daughter of San Juan, Batangas continues to keep the improvement of local volleyball as one of her goals.
