UAAP Season 87 Men’s Finals Game 3 shatters Araneta basketball record

A historic night unfolded at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Sunday, as a record-breaking 25,248 fans packed the venue to witness the thrilling Game 3 of the UAAP Season 87 Men’s Basketball Finals between University of the Philippines and De La Salle University.

This unprecedented turnout surpassed the previous record of 25,192, set during last year’s Season 86 Finals Game 3, which also featured the same teams in an intense championship duel.

The electrifying atmosphere showcased the enduring appeal of the UP-La Salle rivalry, solidifying its place as one of the most celebrated matchups in modern Philippine collegiate basketball history.

The sold-out crowd created a scene like no other, with the arena split into a sea of green and maroon.

Chants and cheers reverberated through the iconic venue, amplifying the stakes of the deciding game.

UP head coach Goldwin Monteverde expressed his gratitude for the passionate support from the university’s community.

“Nakakatuwang makita kung paano kami sinuportahan ng UP community. This game is not just for us but for everyone who believed in the team,” he said.

The record-breaking crowd is a testament to the UAAP’s growing prominence as a national spectacle.

Over the years, the league has continued to draw larger audiences, thanks to its thrilling rivalries, high-caliber talent, and deeply rooted school pride.

The Finals series, which began with UP taking Game 1 at Araneta in front of 16,202 fans and saw La Salle even the series in Game 2 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena with 17,112 attendees, culminated in a decider that shattered expectations.
