Lady Eagles avenge opening day loss, slam Lady Tamaraws

The Ateneo de Manila University Lady Eagles showed just how much they have improved since their first game, sweeping their opening day tormentors Far Easter University Lady Tamaraws, 25-19, 25-21, 25-17, at the FilOil Flying V Centre.

The Lady Eagles also ended FEU’s four-game winning streak.

Ateneo led from the first point, keeping the Lady Tams on their toes with solid serving and blocking. The Lady Eagles never let FEU sniff the lead.

Ateneo saw the return of head coach Tai Bundit from a personal trip to Thailand. The Lady Eagles were still without starting libero Dani Ravena. In her place, Ateneo shifted Ponggay Gaston to a receiving libero.

While they gave up 20 aces to FEU in the first round, Ateneo only surrendered three in the win.

“The second round is a fresh start for us. Siguro, ngayon we just need to show how we can really play and focus as much as we can,” said Ateneo team captain Maddie Madayag who scored six points against FEU.

Jho Maraguinot topped the Lady Eagles with 15 points, while Filipino-Candian Kat Tolentino added 11 markers.

Toni Basas was the only Lady Tamaraw who scored in double digits with 10 markers. Team captain Bernadeth Pons was limited to five points.

The Lady Eagles (5-3) take on the league-leading National University Lady Bulldogs (6-1) on March 17 at the FilOil Flying V Centre. Meanwhile, FEU (5-3) face the struggling University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses (2-6) on March 14 at the same venue.
