UAAP 85 WVB: Adamson survives Bangayan’s 27, gallant UE for solo second

ADAMSON University needed to hurdle University of the East’s fightback in the third and fourth sets, 25-16, 25-19, 20-25, 27-25, to grab solo second in the UAAP Season 85 women’s volleyball tournament at the Philsports Arena in Pasig, Saturday.

The Lady Falcons led by three late in the fourth, 22-19, but Van Bangayan willed the Lady Warriors to a 25-25 count.

However, Lucille Almonte went off-the-block before UE’s KC Cepada’s attack did not cross to give Adamson the 8-3 record, half a game ahead of University of Santo Tomas and National University, both at 7-3.

“Ayun tumagal pa muntik pa kaming matalo, good thing nagrecover pa rin. I’d like to look at the positives,” said Adamson head coach Jerry Yee.

“We have to work on ourselves. Yung kakaba-kaba, yung pressure, yung kung ano ano yung iniisip,” he added.

The Lady Warriors snatched third frame through the efforts of Bangayan and Cepada that saw them take a commanding 23-16 lead en route to forcing a fourth frame.

Kate Santiago produced 18 points for Adamson while Trisha Tubu came through with 13 points as well.

Almonte had nine points, nine receptions, and 13 digs, while Lorene Toring and Ckyle Tagsip added nine and seven points, respectively.

The Lady Falcons wasted Bangayan’s career-high of 27 points on 25 attacks, a block, and an ace along with 14 digs as the Lady Warriors dropped to 0-11.

Up next for Adamson is a clash with league-leading De La Salle University on Wednesday while UE tries to enter the win column next Saturday against NU.
