San Miguel now holds its breath after Terrence Romeo got hurt during the Beermen’s Phoenix Super Basketball Tourney match versus Alaska, Friday at the Upper Deck Sports Center in Pasig.
The flashy scorer suffered an apparent right ankle injury just before the halftime intermission. He landed on a stationary bike along the baseline after going up for a shot.
The former three-time scoring champion had to be carried by his teammates on the way to the bench.
Romeo most likely will not return to the game, which is still ongoing as of this posting. He saw action for over 15 minutes, and has 10 points on 4-of-9 shooting along with four rebounds.
The team doctors have yet to assess Romeo’s ankle, but the 2019 PBA Commissioner’s Cup Finals Most Valuable Player hopes it is only a minor issue.
“Pagkatapos ko tumira, natapakan ko ‘yung parang bike na bakal. Ayun. Pag-step ko, may tumunog eh. Sana tapilok lang talaga,” he said while on the team’s bench icing his hurt ankle.
And San Miguel hopes that Romeo had not suffered anything serious, especially with their current string of injuries heading into the new season, which starts March 8.
SMB has already lost reigning five-time MVP June Mar Fajardo for possibly the whole season due to a fractured tibia. Meanwhile, resident sharpshooter Marcio Lassiter has a fractured nose.
