The PBA has offered possible remedies as Terrafirma finds itself in an impasse following the decision of Christian Standhardinger to retire from playing.
One of the Dyip’s options could be taking legal action against the two-time BPC although it may no longer be feasible since his contract expires on Dec. 31.
“Ang magagawa roon kung hahabulin talaga, magdedemanda si Terrafirma. Pero, isang buwan na lang kasi,” Commissioner Willie Marcial told reporters.
The league chieftain said as much on Thursday, several hours after Spin.ph broke the news that Standhardinger plans to retire as he’s told Terrafirma.
Dyip Governor Bobby Rosales, in an interview with Tiebreaker Times, said that they’ve reminded the 35-year-old that he still has a live contract.
“I even appealed to him to finish the contract, but I couldn’t reason with him,” Rosales, formerly the PBA vice chairman, was quoted as saying.
That’s why Rosales and Terrafirma deemed it best to leave matters to the Commissioner’s Office for the appropriate measures.
Another option that the Dyip could do, according to Marcial, is to simply send Standhardinger an offer sheet before the contract lapses.
In that way, the team could retain his rights even if he does retire.
“Kailangan mag-offer sila,” said Marcial. “Kahit email lang or basta may makita kaming inoffer sila, yung rights nun na kay Terrafirma.
“Maski na mag-retire siya, or gusto nya bumalik,” he added.
And if they don’t?
“Free agent ‘yun,” said Marcial.
