Col. Michael “Mikee” Romero has long been known as a world-ranked polo player and a prominent sports patron, but on Feb. 26, he demonstrated yet another arena where he excels: national defense.
Romero met with United States Air Force Reserve Command (US-AFRC) Commander Lt. Gen. John Healy during a historic visit by the Philippine Air Force – Air Force Reserve Command (PAF-AFRC) to a United States Space Force installation, highlighting his strategic role in strengthening the country’s reserve forces.
The meeting focused on expanding joint reserve training, professional military exchanges, and institutional collaboration.
Both sides emphasized boosting interoperability, improving reserve readiness, and building long-term cooperation between their forces.
In a symbolic gesture, Lt. Gen. Healy presented Col. Romero with his personal US-AFRC Commander’s badge—an honor reflecting mutual trust, respect, and the shared commitment of the two allies to continued collaboration.
While many know Romero for his achievements in polo and his contributions to Philippine sports, he has also played a pivotal role in the PAF modernization program, including facilitating the acquisition of three C-130J aircraft scheduled for delivery this year and next.
His service as Wing Commander of the Tactical Operations Wing Reserve – Northern Luzon (TOWR–Northern Luzon) and as chairman of the Association of Reservists of the Philippines, Inc. (ARRAPI) underscores his dedication to national defense—proving that leadership and discipline on the field translate seamlessly to military strategy.
The historic visit was made possible under the leadership of Philippine Air Force Commanding General Lt. Gen. Arthur Cordura, opening the door for stronger bilateral engagement and expanded reserve collaboration.
The delegation also included Col. Floreto Solano, OIC Wing Commander of Tactical Operations Wing Reserve – Southern Luzon, and Lt. Col. Paulino Lomoljo, Director for Personnel of the Air Force Reserve Command.
Both the US-AFRC and PAF-AFRC reiterated their commitment to joint training and sharing best practices, with a focus on strengthening reserve capabilities.
PAF-AFRC Commander Maj. Gen. Ronie Petinglay will continue coordinating with his US counterpart to implement expanded training programs and enhance bilateral cooperation.
From guiding polo teams to guiding reserve forces, MRomero proves that whether on horseback or in the command room, his commitment to excellence knows no bounds.
