Kiefer Ravena failed a random drug test after Gilas Pilipinas’ game versus Japan in the second window of the FIBA World Cup Qualifiers last February, according to sources closely monitoring the situation.
Ordered by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas, Ravena, 24, had to fly back to Manila immediately on Sunday — just hours before the PBA All-Star Game between the Visayas All-Stars and the SMART All-Stars.
And it was because the meeting is “urgent”.
Ravena reportedly tested positive for an illegal substance prior to Gilas’ match with the Akatsuki Five here in Manila which they won, 89-84.
In that victory, the 6-foot combo guard finished with 13 points together with five assists.
FIBA has a strict protocol with regards to doping, cracking down on any substance that can enhance the performance of an athlete. Any athlete who is taking medication should fully disclose it prior to testing.
In Ravena’s case, one of Tiebreaker Times’ sources disclosed that only a small trace of the said substance was found in his system. However, he failed to get clearance that he was taking it prior to the drug examination.
Because of this, Ravena is set to face a sanction from FIBA-sanctioned tournaments. It could either fall to as low as a reprimand or could go to as high as a two-year suspension depending on FIBA’s investigations.
A press conference will be held later this Monday regarding the matter.
