Sheena Toring overcomes first-game nerves, thanks to Sherwin Meneses’ familiar voice

VIGAN, ILOCOS SUR – Joining the winningest team in the league naturally comes with high expectations — and rookie Sheena Toring is embracing that challenge head-on.

On Sunday night, Toring finally made her debut for the Creamline Cool Smashers, contributing to their dominant 25-10, 25-21, 25-10 victory over Capital1 in the 2025 PVL On Tour held at the Chavit Coliseum here.

The former National University standout tallied five points — including two service aces — in just two sets as a starter for Creamline.

“Super blessed ako,” said Toring moments after her very first PVL match. “Malaking pasasalamat ko kay Lord talaga kasi first pro team, sa Creamline agad ako.

“Malaki ‘yung expectations, so kailangan lang talagang i-improve ‘yung game ko everyday.”

With Bea De Leon still recovering from injury, Toring seized the opportunity to start.

She admitted feeling nervous at first, but the jitters faded quickly thanks to the familiar voice of Sherwin Meneses — her former coach at NU, now calling the shots for Creamline — who gave her confidence and encouragement.

“Minindset ko lang po talaga na since first six ako sa first game, nandun yung kaba pero sabi naman ni coach Sherwin na maglaro lang talaga ako nang maayos,” said the 5-foot-10 middle blocker.

For his part, Meneses expressed his happiness at being able to continue mentoring a talent like Toring, saying he’s grateful they can build on the foundation they established back in college.

“Siyempre, happy ako kasi yung continuation ng career niya, napunta sa’min. Hopefully, ma-develop pa namin yung mga ibang bagay na dapat pa naming gawin sa NU, yung sistema namin sa Creamline,” said the Grand Slam-winning coach.

“Thankful kami kay Sheena na nandito siya sa’min.”
