Scottie Thompson relieved that ‘buwis buhay’ board stopped Meralco’s run

Scottie Thompson simply capitalized when the opportunity presented itself.

Little did he know that it would end up as one of the many highlights that defined Barangay Ginebra’s 99-93 victory over Meralco in Game Two of the 2021-22 PBA Governors’ Cup Finals, Friday night at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The star guard wowed many yet again — most especially the 12,248 fans that witnessed the match live — when he soared for the rebound to collar the missed three-pointer of counterpart Aaron Black with 5:11 left to play.

And, yes, he outjumped opposing big men Tony Bishop and Cliff Hodge.

It led to a Justin Brownlee three-point play on the other end. That board was definitely crucial, since  it helped the Gin Kings register the six-point victory. More importantly, though, it equalized the series at one game apiece.

“Wala na, tinalon ko nalang. Buwis buhay na.

“Momentum na sila non. Tapos lagi silang nakakakuha ng offensive rebound. Sakto natapat sa ulo ko so tinalon ko nalang. Nadapa pa nga ata ko,” said Thompson of that play.

Even head coach Tim Cone couldn’t help but be in awe of that.

Yes, even after all these years, he remains amazed with Thompson, who is on pace to win his first-ever BPC award big thanks to his sensational showing in the playoffs to keep the reigning champions’ repeat bid alive.

“That kalawit rebound by Scottie… I mean, I had a perfect angle on it,” he said.

“It was amazing. Those are the kinds of plays that win games, and if you can do it in a series, they give you chances to win championships.”

The Perpetual great, though, said that they’ve made a conscious effort on their part to chase after the rebounds as much as they can. They also believe that controlling that department would lead to desirable results.

Ginebra won that battle, 49-41, 37 of which came from the defensive end. That, after being outrebounded 44-48 in the series opener last Wednesday, which, coincidentally, saw them lose by way of a 91-104 decision.

“Ayun nga pino-point out ni Coach Tim talaga,” said Thompson, who finished with 16 points and 12 rebounds. “Kasi ang assessment namin, sino talaga lamang sa rebounds, siya nakakakuha ng panalo sa series na ‘to.”
