The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas and the Philippine Sports Association for the Differently Abled – NPC Philippines have officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding to promote and develop wheelchair basketball across the country.
The agreement was formalized at the SBP headquarters in Mandaluyong City by SBP Executive Director Erika Dy and PHILSPADA President Michael I. Barredo, with PHILSPADA Secretary General Godofredo Custodio serving as witness.
This strategic partnership seeks to foster collaboration between the two organizations in creating more opportunities for differently abled athletes, coaches, and officials within the sport of basketball.
“This partnership is a commitment to inclusivity, national development, and the transformative power of basketball,” said Dy.
“The SBP is proud to stand alongside PHILSPADA in building platforms where every athlete—regardless of ability—has the chance to excel in the sport we all love.”
Under the MOU, the SBP will provide professional training and development opportunities for PHILSPADA coaches, as well as support for events, clinics, and tournaments.
Both parties have committed to co-develop and implement inclusive programs, expand access to basketball venues, and promote wheelchair basketball as an integral part of the Philippine basketball landscape.
“This MOU is more than just a document—it’s a pledge to uphold equality in basketball,” said Barredo.
“PHILSPADA is excited to work with the SBP to build a more inclusive sporting future through wheelchair basketball. Wheelchair basketball is basketball—and Filipinos love basketball.”
The partnership will remain in effect through the end of the current Olympic cycle, concluding in August 2028.
Guided by shared values of collaboration, respect, and autonomy, the MOU lays out a comprehensive framework for mutual support, open communication, and long-term sustainability.
Looking ahead, both organizations reaffirm their joint mission: to grow and develop basketball in the Philippines—for everyone.
