PSC, MMDA stage free watch party as Eala eyes Wimbledon quarterfinal, Gilas battles Australia

Filipino sports fans will have the chance to witness two of the country’s biggest sporting events on one stage as the Philippine Sports Commission and the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority host a free public watch party at the Philsports Arena on Monday.

The event will spotlight Filipina tennis star Alex Eala’s historic Wimbledon campaign as she takes on Italy’s Jasmine Paolini in the Round of 16, while Gilas Pilipinas battles Australia in the FIBA Basketball World Cup Asian Qualifiers later in the evening.

Gates to the Philsports Arena will open at 5:30 p.m., with admission free on a first-come, first-served basis. The venue can accommodate up to 8,000 spectators.

The watch party comes as Eala continues to make history at the All England Club.

The 20-year-old reached the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time after stunning defending champion and world No. 3 Iga Swiatek in straight sets, becoming the first Filipina in the Open Era to advance to the Wimbledon Round of 16.

Her latest breakthrough marked her seventh career victory over a top-10 opponent and her third on grass. Following the upset, Eala climbed to a projected career-high world ranking of No. 28.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. described Eala’s remarkable run as a source of pride for the country, while PSC Chairman Patrick Gregorio said the watch party is an opportunity for Filipinos to unite behind one of the nation’s brightest sporting stars.

“Alex’s victory is a source of immense pride for the nation. Hosting this watch party is our way of uniting Filipinos to celebrate her journey and to show her that the entire country is behind her,” said Gregorio.

Fans inside the arena will also get to cheer for Gilas Pilipinas, which faces world No. 5 Australia at 6:30 p.m. in the final game of the first window of the FIBA Basketball World Cup Asian Qualifiers.

MMDA Chairman Don Artes emphasized the agency’s commitment to supporting Filipino athletes competing on the international stage.

“The MMDA is one with supporting Alex and other Filipino athletes who represent the country on the global stage as part of our broader commitment to fostering national pride and community spirit among Metro Manila residents,” Artes said.

The event is organized by the PSC, MMDA, and the Philippine Tennis Association, with support from the Pasig City government to ensure smooth logistics and crowd management.

PHILTA Secretary General and Navotas City Mayor John Rey Tiangco highlighted the impact of Eala’s success on the next generation of athletes.

“Sa PHILTA, lagi naming sinasabi na ‘Tennis Transforms.’ Hindi lang nito binabago ang laro—binabago nito ang buhay. It teaches discipline, resilience, confidence at nagbibigay ng mga oportunidad na hindi mo akalaing posible,” he said.

The watch party is sponsored by Cignal, PLDT, MediaQuest, Smart, and the MVP Sports Foundation. Fans who cannot make it to the arena can also catch the action nationwide through Pilipinas Live.

MediaQuest Holdings Inc. President and CEO Ricky Vargas said the public viewing is also business leader and sports patron Manny V. Pangilinan’s birthday gift to Filipino sports fans as he celebrates his 80th birthday on July 14.
