Gilas Pilipinas will be without its biggest scoring threat when they face the Australia Boomers in the FIBA World Cup 2027 Asian Qualifiers on Monday, as naturalized center Justin Brownlee has been ruled out due to multiple injuries.
The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas announced on Sunday that Brownlee will not suit up for the Pool A showdown against the Boomers, which tips off at 6:30 PM (Manila time) at Spark Arena.
“Justin Brownlee will miss the game against Australia due to hamstring strain and peroneal tendinopathy on his right leg and left knee swelling and cartilage defects,” the federation said in a statement.
Brownlee entered the third window as Gilas’ leading scorer, averaging 16.5 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 4.8 assists through the first four games of the qualifiers.

However, the 38-year-old veteran was visibly hampered in the Philippines’ heartbreaking 106-102 double-overtime loss to New Zealand on Friday. He managed just five points on 2-of-3 shooting while collecting eight rebounds and four assists before fouling out late in the second extra period. He also committed three turnovers.
Brownlee had actually been nursing an injury during the PBA Season 50 Commissioner’s Cup Finals.
His absence leaves head coach Tim Cone with an 11-man rotation against an Australian side that remains unbeaten and is aiming to complete a sweep of Pool A.
With Brownlee sidelined, much of the offensive responsibility is expected to fall on Carl Tamayo, Kevin Quiambao, Juan Gomez de Liaño, and Dwight Ramos, who will need to shoulder a larger scoring burden against the best team in the region.
Cone will also rely on June Mar Fajardo, Chris Newsome, and Troy Rosario, along with RJ Abarrientos, Justine Baltazar, AJ Edu, and Mike Phillips, as Gilas looks to snap its three-game losing streak.
