Kevin Quiambao set to miss Asian Games as Goyang Sono duties call

Another key member of Gilas Pilipinas is expected to miss the 20th Asian Games.

Along with AJ Edu and Dwight Ramos, Kevin Quiambao will not suit up in the quadrennial meet.

Following the fourth window of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Asian Qualifiers, which concludes on August 30, the 25-year-old is expected to immediately fly to Goyang to join the Sono Skygunners as they begin preparations for the 2026-27 KBL season.

Expectations are high for Goyang Sono after its runner-up finish last season.

The 6-foot-5 Quiambao is averaging 9.2 points, 1.8 rebounds, and 1.8 assists for Gilas Pilipinas in the Asian Qualifiers.

Edu and Ramos, meanwhile, are expected to report to their respective B.League clubs — Gunma and Levanga Hokkaido — as both teams will participate in the B.League Manila Games on September 9 and 10 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.

On the other hand, Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas executive director Erika Dy remains hopeful that Bennie Boatwright’s naturalization process will be completed by September 10, the opening day of the Asian Games.

Unlike FIBA competitions, Asian Games eligibility is not governed by FIBA rules. It’s possible for Gilas head coach Tim Cone to field a frontcourt featuring Justin Brownlee, Angelo Kouame, and Boatwright together.
