Yuka Saso has broken her silence regarding her reported decision to represent Japan when she turns 22 years old in a couple of years.
And yes, Saso – born to a Filipina mother and a Japanese father – confirmed that she has begun the process of acquiring her Japanese citizenship.
“Under Japanese law, prior to turning 22 years old, I have to choose between Japanese and Filipino citizenship,” read her statement as released by ICTSI prior to the start of the 2021 Toto Japan Classic.
“I will be turning 22 on June 20, 2022 and, after much thought and consultation with my family, I have begun the process of acquiring Japanese citizenship.”
During her years as a jungolf, Saso and her father decided to train and grow her game in the Philippines. They cited that courses here are much more economical compared to Japan.
Saso went on to represent the Philippines in numerous multi-national events. She won two golds in the 2018 Asian Games while placing ninth in the 2020 Summer Olympics.
Saso had also been carrying the Filipino flag in the LPGA tour.
And she is hoping for understanding as she makes this crucial decision not just for her career, but also for her family.
“Thank you for respecting my choice. I am grateful to my Filipino and Japanese supporters,” she expressed. “I would not have achieved anything in my career without your support.
“I look forward to making you proud as I continue my professional golfing career.”
Moreover, she remains proud of her heritage.
“I am a Filipina, born in the Philippines to a Japanese father and a Filipino mother. I was raised in both Japan and the Philippines and I am immensely proud of my dual heritage and that will never change.”
