Santiago gets nibble of world-class competition, wants more

When the PSL brass announced that they were employing seven imports to power the PSL-F2 Logistics Manila contingent for the 2016 FIVB Women’s Club World Championship, the seven local players weren’t expected to get much playing time.

But when game time came against Brazilian club Rexona-Sesc Rio, Jaja Santiago was the first name announced in the starting lineup. Stepping onto the SM Mall of Asia Arena floor, Santiago absorbed the cheers of the crowd.

The locals ended up losing in straight sets but not before giving the Brazilians a fright.FIVB-CWC-PSL-F2-Logistics-Manila-vs.-Rexona-Sesc-Rio-Jaja-Santiago-9048 Santiago gets nibble of world-class competition, wants more 2016 FIVB Women's CWC News Volleyball - philippine sports news

Santiago managed just three points, two coming off blocks. Although she is aware of the immensely high level of volleyball she played against, Santiago isn’t satisfied with the way she played.

“Hindi ko ma-explain ‘yung pakiramdam ng ito na, makakalaro na ako sa Worlds. Ang laking bagay na nakalaro ako sa Worlds para sa sarili kong career,” said the National University stalwart.

“Ang goal ko lang naman is mapakita ‘yung makakaya ko. Every game, kailangan mailabas ko ‘yung best ko.”

Looking at how Rexona’s middles performed, Santiago saw how far she still has to go. “Kung papanuorin mo sila maglaro, lahat talaga ng skills meron sila. Lahat talaga ng fundamentals, meron sila. So marami pa talaga akong ayusin.”

Rexona’s head coach Bernardo Rezende, who recently led Brazil’s Men’s team to the 2016 Rio Olympics gold medal, spoke of Santiago’s potential.

“She’s tall, she’s young so she still has a lot of room to improve,” Rezende said.

“What’s important now is for everyone to get continued exposure in international competitions. One tournament in a year is not enough for them to improve.”
