When the PSL brass announced that they were employing seven imports to power the PSL-F2 Logistics Manila contingent for the 2016 FIVB Women’s Club World Championship, the seven local players weren’t expected to get much playing time.
But when game time came against Brazilian club Rexona-Sesc Rio, Jaja Santiago was the first name announced in the starting lineup. Stepping onto the SM Mall of Asia Arena floor, Santiago absorbed the cheers of the crowd.
The locals ended up losing in straight sets but not before giving the Brazilians a fright.
Santiago managed just three points, two coming off blocks. Although she is aware of the immensely high level of volleyball she played against, Santiago isn’t satisfied with the way she played.
Looking at how Rexona’s middles performed, Santiago saw how far she still has to go. Carol Da Silva, Rexona’s lead middle hitter, recorded a tournament-record 10 blocks.
Rexona’s head coach Bernardo Rezende, who recently led Brazil’s Men’s team to the 2016 Rio Olympics gold medal, spoke of Santiago’s potential.
“She’s tall, she’s young so she still has a lot of room to improve,” Rezende said.
“What’s important now is for everyone to get continued exposure in international competitions. One tournament in a year is not enough for them to improve.”
