San Miguel and Meralco will take center stage when the Philippine Basketball Association celebrates its 50th founding anniversary on April 9.
Commissioner Willie Marcial revealed on Tuesday that the two teams will play against each other in the league’s birthdate at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.
Both the Beermen and the Bolts will be donning retro jerseys, he added, to pay homage to two of the most storied clubs in Philippine basketball.
SMB, for one, is the only remaining pioneer team in the league, one of the nine entities that left the now-defunct MICAA to form the PBA in 1975
Meralco, on the other hand, only joined Asia’s first pro league in 2010 but has been known as a former participant of the MICAA during the pre-PBA years.
Marcial and his office had long been planning to pit the two teams against each other when the league returned to the Rizal Memorial Coliseum last year.
Finally, the PBA found the most opportune time to do so: in celebrating its 50th anniversary in what should be the start of a busy stretch ahead.
Still, details about the April 9 game date and the week ahead are being ironed out, Marcial said, and will soon be announced once everything is all set.
